Image size:11 1/4" x 15 1/2"; Sheet size: 16" x 20 9/16" Denis created the Amour series at the suggestion of Vollard. At the time the series was completed, Denis was involved with the Nabis brotherhood as well as with the symbolists Mallarmé and Redon. The inspiration for the titles could have come from Verlaine’s poetry. Another inspiration for this series could have come from early Christian art, and particularly Italian frescoes from the fourteenth century. The lyrical qualities of the lithographs are accentuated by the soft colors which all range within similar tonal values. |
