Original woodcut trimmed to the borderline with Dürer's monogram signature, lower center. An impression from the series, "The Large Passion," with Latin text on the verso. In excellent condition. Image size: 15 1/4" x 10 3/4" Catalogue reference: Strauss 39; Bartsch 12; Meder 123 According to the King James Version of the Bible (Mark xv:45-46) Joseph of Arimathaea pleaded with Pilate for possession of Christ’s body. Upon Pilate’s approval Joseph bought fine linen, wrapped the body in it and laid Christ in a sepulcher hewn out of rock. St.John appears at the lower right watching Christ’s body being lifted as he rests a consoling hand on the shoulder of the grief-stricken Virgin Mary. According to Wölfflin, in the North, the scene of Christ’s Deposition was much favored over the Lamentation. |
