Helleu was an acknowledged leader both of society and of the artistic circles of "Fin de Siècle" Paris. J.J. Tissot introduced Helleu to the technique of drypoint in 1885, and it was through his influence that Helleu was to develop the form of stylish portrayal of society ladies for which he is now known.   Helleu's drypoints were tremendously admired at the time by both artists and collectors, and they remain today amongst the real masterpieces of the "Belle Époque."
