The treatment of the pattern of the colors and the almost total absence of descriptive line make "Orientalisches" one of the most revolutionary of all the woodcuts in this series. |

Reiterweg, 1911
( Riders on a Track )
Inventory # 51879
| Original woodcut in black ink, on pale cream laid Van Gelder paper. Signed with the artist's monogram in the block. Published in the 1938 edition of the art review, "XXe Siècle" in an edition of 1200, aside from the first edition of 350 impressions, issued for the series "Klange," Piper and Co., Munich in 1913. A very fine strong impression with full margins in excellent condition, never framed.
Image size: 6 1/2" x 8 1/4"; Sheet size: 11"X10 5/8". The great intensity of the first issue impressions of the Klange woodcuts is very noticeable in the black and white prints. The pattern of the sharp black ink against the surface of the paper was used by Kandinsky to create an emotional reaction- the same emotional stimulus as was sought in the Expessionist prints of the Brücke artists. |

Motiv aous Improvisation 25, 1911
( Motif from Improvisation No. 25 )
Inventory # 51880
Original woodcut in black ink on pale cream laid Van Gelder paper. Signed with the artist's monogram in the block. Published in the 1938 edition of the art review, "XXe Siècle" in an edition of 1200, aside from the first edition of 350 impressions, issued for the series "Klange," Piper and Co., Munich in 1913. A very fine strong impression, with full margins, in excellent condition, never framed. Image: 8 1/2" x 8 5/8"; Sheet: 11" x 10 5/8" Kandinsky used the theme of this woodcut in both a watercolor and oil entitled "The Garden of Love - Improvisation No. 25." It appears, however, that the woodcut may well have been completed before the painting if not before the watercolor.

Schwarzer Fleck, 1911
( Black Spot )
Inventory # 51881
| Original woodcut in black ink, on pale cream laid Van Gelder paper. Signed with the artist's monogram in the block. Published in the 1938 edition of the art review, “XXe Siècle” in an edition of 1200, aside from the first edition of 350 impressions, issued for the series "Klange," Piper and Co., Munich in 1913. A very fine strong impression with full margins, in excellent condition, never framed. Image size: 6 5/8” x 7"; Sheet size: 11” x 10 5/8” Catalogue reference: Roethel 111, only state. "Schwarzer Fleck" and "Jungster Tag" were probably the last two blocks in the Klange suite. Certainly their style and handling makes them amongst the most avant-garde and adventurous; the lines have become almost pure hieroglyphics, suggesting figurative shapes totally abstract in their intent. |
