This etching portrays Kollwitz, the artist, the wife and the mother at age 45. The self-portrait was executed in 1912, two years before the beginning of World War I, when the climate in pre-war Germany was one of increasing nationalism and dictatorial rule by the Kaiser Wilhelm II. This was also the year of the first American exhibition of Käthe Kollwitz’ work held in New York. From this year on she rarely etched, concentrating more on lithography, woodcut, drawing and sculpture. ( Klein & Klein, p.64 )
