Original crayon and brush lithograph with scratch technique printed with brown ink on imitation Japon paper. Hand signed by the artist “Käthe Kollwitz” in pencil, lower right. From the second state of three according to Knesebeck. A proof printed prior to the 1918 numbered Richter edition. The stone was destroyed. Her son, Hans Kollwitz, described his mother as having a quiet presence and being a woman who felt the sorrows and troubles of others very deeply and personally. Käthe once said, “I feel the burden. I must not draw back from the task of acting as an advocate. I must speak out about the sufferings of the people.” (Klein & Klein, p.144) |
