Color aquatint printed on wove paper with full margins. After an original painting by Maximilien Luce, engraved by Jacques Villon with Luce's collaboration. Hand signed in pencil by Luce, lower left and by Villon, lower right. Numbered in pencil "1/10 épreuve d'artiste (artist proof)" apart from the edition of 200, and the unsigned edition printed by the Chalcographie du Louvre. Published by Bernheim-Jeune Galerie, Paris. Image: 14 1/4" x 20 1/4", sheet: 19 5/8" x 26 1/4" During the 1920's Villon was commissioned by the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune to make a series of large color aquatints derived from important works of the 19th and 20th century painters. Villon's series of 40 color aquatints after the paintings of great modern masters such as Cézanne, Renoir, Picasso, Rousseau, Matisse, Braque, Duchamp and Dufy are absolutely remarkable for capturing the original spirit of the paintings. Jacques Villon was an outstanding artist and printmaker in his own right, and when working with his contemporaries, such as in this case, Luce, he commanded their great admiration for his inspiration in evoking the real atmosphere of their work. The project was a true collaboration between the two artists in the transcription of the image from one medium to another. |
