The Masters of the Poster 1895-1900

Les Maitres de l'Affiche features works by 97 artists, some of whom were preeminent painters and printmakers in various stages of their careers.   The publication of Les Maitres de l'Affiche appears to have been the logical consequence of the vogue of this new artistic means of expression, the poster, which had just been invented by Jules Cheret in the 1860's. The popularity of the poster spread quickly from France to the otheir parts of the world during the last twenty years of the 19th Century. Transgressing their initial advertising fonction, posters, became art objects, much sought after by collectors. This suite published by Chaix Publication, comprised of 256 color plates that represented a wide-ranging selection of outstanding original prints from the turn of the Twentieth century. Issued as separate sheets measuring 15 3/4 x 11 1/2 inches.   These were produced for subscribers every month for 60 months, from December 1895 through November 1900.
