This portfolio is based on the second play "Ubu aux Baléares" written by Alfred Jarry (French, 1873-1907). Jarry wrote five plays based on the fictional character Ubu. The Ubu plays satirized European philosophies, and mocked royalty, religion, and society in general. His first play, "Ubu Roi," premiered in 1896. Because of their chaotic narratives and use of invented language, Jarry's plays were seen as the precursor to Absurdist, Dada and Surrealist art happenings and performances. Miró made illustrations for three of the Ubu texts, "Ubu Roi" (1966), "Ubu aux Baléares" (1971), and "L'Enfance d'Ubu" (1975). |
