Picasso was asked to make a lithograph to be used as the poster for the “Vallauris Pottery, Flowers and Perfumes” Exhibition from August 24-29, 1948. However instead of designing one poster, Picasso produced 3 different designs in one day, all featuring a faun’s head. From these 3 designs Picasso made a total of 9 print variations: Each faun design had an edition of 25 printed with the faun head in black and white, an edition of 25 printed with the faun head in 2 colors (for a total edition of 50), and an edition of 300 printed of the color poster version with text. At this time Picasso worked on ceramics everyday for hours at the Ramié pottery works in Vallauris. He also had a habit of reusing subject matter in different mediums. Not surprisingly, the three faun designs for the posters look very similar to ceramic plate designs.
