47517
| Original etching and drypoint
printed in black ink on laid paper. Signed and dated in the plate,
lower left: "Rembrandt f. 1654." An impression of Usticke's second
of three states, probably from the HL Basan recueil. Platemark: 3 13/16" x 5 11/16", sheet: 4" x 5 15/16" Catalogue reference: B.55; H.276; BB 54-D; Usticke 55 ii/iii "Crossing the Brook" is part of a small scale series illustrating the childhood of Jesus. This image shows a moment in the journey of the holy family as they traveled from Egypt. Like others in the series, this scene takes place at night. The moonlight illuminating the Virgin and child seems almost to have its source within the figures, so that it seems as if they were glowing with holy energy. |
