The
White Negress, 1631
Inventory # 47559
Original etching
printed in black ink on laid paper. An impression of Hind's only state and an early
impression of Usticke's second and final state.
With collector's stamp of Hilgrave Cox (Lugt
1298c) on the verso. The plate is not in existence. Sheet: 3 15/16" x 3 1/8" Catalogue reference: Bartsch 357; Hind 364; Usticke 357 ii/ii Completed in 1631, when Rembrandt was producing many portraits of Dutch locals in Amsterdam, "The White Negress" is especially rare because the plate is no longer in existence. This lifetime impression captures Rembrandt's fascination with portraying characters through facial features. It became known as "The White Negress" because, in spite of her facial features, she appears to have white skin. |
