Mary Hamilton was an English professional entertainer, otherwise called "diseuse", who performed monologues. Mary Hamilton is represented in this particular lithograph in her male costume, which she usually wore for her performances. The broken contour lines and the crosshatching resemble Toulouse-Lautrec's drawing style of the 1890s. This lithograph was possibly shown at the exhibition "La Libre Esthétique" under the name of "the fair Miss Mary H.". Out of the 525 impressions that were printed on China paper, 300 to 350 were destroyed during World War II.
